General product description
Shaft and manhole covers are generally used on roads and other surfaces used by vehicles and traffic in order to cover openings in the ground. They are therefore exposed to the same traffic loads as the surrounding road surfaces and the safety and structural specifications, and load-bearing capacity requirements applicable to them are detailed in DIN EN 124.
Classification:
| Load-bearing class | Description |
Class B 125 |
|
Class D |
|
Class E 600 |

Class F |

In compliance with the applicable standards, the surfaces of cast cover parts do not have to be coated, since such coatings are for cosmetic purposes only. The surface-oxidation of cast iron generally produces an effective protective layer.
The bearing surfaces of shaft and manhole covers must be manufactured in such a way that they properly fit the frame. The bearing surfaces of load-bearing class D 400 to F 900 shaft and manhole covers must be designed in such a way as to ensure that they are stable, fit properly and do not make any noise. This can be achieved by, for example: mechanical processing, sound absorbing inserts, three-point bearing surfaces.
Shaft and manhole covers can furthermore be manufactured to a variety of designs and specifications regarding, e.g.: lockability, rainwater-proofness, sand sealing, backwater protection, variations in surface design, and many others.
