Cable installation ducts and inspection manholes can be created on site using a range of individual components. They consist of a single base plate, one or two sub-frames, an intermediate frame and a size II to V top; or, in the case of size V to XII ducts, ceiling plates. The top or ceiling plates form the base for the relevant manhole and duct covers.
When determining the total heights of these systems, it is important to also take the mortar joints into account. The individual duct and manhole components must be secured against moving using concrete-embedded bolts (in the corners). These ducts and manholes are designed in accordance with DB AG (National German Rail Company) load specifications UIC 71 and are therefore suitable for installation in pedestrian and road traffic areas.
Duct and manhole covers must be ordered separately in accordance with their required load-bearing capacity ratings. All bottom duct and manhole parts are equipped with blind windows in their side and front walls. The top and intermediate parts feature predetermined breaking points along their long and short sides, in accordance with customer-specifications. Where required, they can also - where structurally possible - be fitted with other openings. Ducts and manholes can be used with size 1 to 5 entry plates for connecting pipes.
B+F ducts and manholes are furthermore fitted with DIN E 1212-compliant steel rungs as accessories, which are either embedded into the fresh concrete immediately after pouring or bolted in afterwards; and can also be supplied with ladders (incl. ladders with retractable tops to ensure safe access).
B+F’s cable installation ducts and inspection manholes are available in the following standard sizes.

Design variations
The covers and tops for size II to V ducts are available in the following designs:
- a) For pavement load-rated, rough road surfaces (8 kN/m2):
Cover and top without flat steel frame - b) For surfaces with load-ratings as above, but tarmaced or paved:
Cover and top with flat steel frame - c) For bridge capacity rating 12
Cover and top with angle steel frame
Size II covers and tops can be supplied with a top frame with a flush, concrete-encased SA frame, with an inner diameter of 65/60 cm. Size III covers and tops can be supplied with a top frame with an inner-diameter access opening of 60 x 65 cm. Size IV to X covers and top can be supplied with a top frame or ceiling plate with an inner - diameter access opening of 70 x 70 cm or 70 x 140 cm. The top frame and ceiling plate can also be fitted with a flush, concrete-encased 70/70 or 140/70 cable duct cover.
General Information
B+F’s installation ducts and inspection manholes are manufactured in accordance with the Eisenbahnbundesamt (EBA) (Federal German Railway Authority) type approvals and are designed for installation immediately next to or between rail tracks, i.e. they comply with load model UIC 71. The max. depths of these ducts are detailed in the enclosed documentation. B+F can also, upon request, manufacture ducts with customer-specific depths, which will be separately approved under the relevant structural and technical building regulations.
All B+F top, bottom and intermediate frames are manufactured in accordance with the EBA type approval without grove/spring assemblies. This means that these frames can be installed as required (opening to the top or bottom). The ducts are secured against moving horizontally by steel rods (4 rods per duct) that are inserted into the frame after assembly. These steel rods are included in B+F deliveries and are not subject to any extra charges. The lengths of these rods are determined in accordance with the clear depth of the ordered ducts.
Frames with installation heights of 20/22.5/40/45 cm can also be fitted with additional openings for connecting moulded cable duct bricks or PVC pipes.
Size V top frames and size VII, IX and X cover plates can be fitted with openings for cable distribution boxes. B+F installation ducts and inspection manholes can also be fitted with steel rungs or anchoring rails.
B+F will also, upon request, provide its customers with shaft-specification recording forms to enable customers to clearly record any customer-specific changes, such as openings or additional equipment.
