General product description

B+F’s most popular and best-selling shaft and manhole cover series – the SA 2000 / SA 2005 – has been the result of extensive development work. The range of different models available under this series and their great range of different optional equipment have made the SA 2000 a shaft and manhole cover system that optimally meets all practical requirements. This system comprises shaft and manhole covers of a vast range of different dimensions for different-sized access holes and different cover designs, as well as a great number of design options for adapting the cover surface to the road surface, and covers specifically designed for the DIN EN 124 load-bearing classes B, D, E and F, detailed above.

The most essential advantages presented by the SA 2000 / SA 2005 shaft and manhole covers are their buckling resistant frames (1), their level cover bearing surfaces (2), height and incline adjusting screws (3), protective runners (4) and above all the hot-dip galvanizing of all metal parts (5).

  1. The buckling resistance of B+F’s frame exceeds the German Telekom’s technical specifications. Thanks to not requiring any major alignment work, this frame makes covers extremely easy to install, prevents them from rattling and thus ultimately from being seriously damaged or destroyed.
  2. The load-bearing class D, E and F level cover bearing-surfaces are manufactured from mechanically processed, high-quality, structural steel.
  3. The adjusting screws enable the frame to be adapted to the height and/or incline of the surrounding road surface without necessitating the use of any tools or packing.
  4. The protective runners protect the bottom bearing surfaces from damage.
  5. The galvanisation of our shaft and manhole covers not only provides them with long-lasting corrosion protection that is immune to cracking and breaking off as a result of exposure to mechanical loads (see DIN EN ISO 1461, section 4 and 6.4), but is also a replacement for the environmentally-hazardous tar-pitch epoxy-resin coating that some manufacturers still continue to use. B+F’s shaft and manhole covers were furthermore awarded a MPA (Materials Inspection Authority) certificate for outstanding road-salt resistance. The galvanisation of our shaft and manhole covers also guarantees that they can be easily opened and closed again at any time, and that they do not start to fuse to the frame, or fail to properly fit, as a result of rust.

In order to enable the shaft and manhole cover exteriors to be ideally adapted to existing road surfaces, SA 2005 shaft and manhole covers can also be supplied with covers designed for paving – thus further increasing the range of potential cover surface designs. Paving shaft and manhole covers may only be used on load-bearing class B frames with load-bearing class D installation heights, which will generate an internal height of 9 cm for the paving stones.

Since B+F Dorsten manufactures its shaft and manhole covers, and processes all of the associated steel components itself, it is also happy to produce custom-made covers, one example of which is the B+F kerb cover SA "Bordsteinabdeckung".

This kerb cover is ideal for use where manholes end up opening partly onto a road and partly onto a pedestrianised area following changes to routes. This kerb cover is designed to accommodate both the difference in height between the road and pavement, and the kerb’s slanting edge to achieve a perfect fit. These kerb covers can be adapted to a range of specifications and are available as screw-fitted covers. Screw-fitted covers provide efficient protection against unauthorised access to underground shafts.

Using a combination of materials in the construction of covers (steel and concrete) requires a high standard of workmanship, which, at B+F, is assured and monitored by:

  • Güteschutz Beton e.V. NRW (German Concrete Quality Certification Body)
  • Internal quality inspections
  • T-Com quality sample and standard sample inspections
  • The Materialprüfungsamt MPA NRW (Materials Inspection Authority MPA NRW)
  • and the Schweißtechnik Lehrvereinigung SLV (Training Association for Welding Technologies)
